Hye Won Lee is a Korean-born, Meanjin/Brisbane-based artist who works with painting to explore the felt experience of spiritual faith within the context of everyday life. Her work is aimed to encourage viewers to consider the idea that the sublime is not reserved, only to be experienced on rare occasions, but that it is hidden in every moment, available to all who may seek it.
Lee is inspired by landscape imagery which she takes from her own immediate surroundings, usually within her own neighbourhood. She reproduces this imagery onto canvas, mainly using mixed media techniques involving oil, acrylic and pencil. Lee takes a particular interest in visually emphasising the vast and mysterious qualities of the very ordinary, suburban scenes she chooses to depict.
